This, the fourth of ten volumes of the saga of Japan towards the end of the Meiji period (1867 - 1912), sees the conclusion of the story arc Autumn's Ballerina. With German dancer Elise Weigert now living in Japan, Ogai Mori, Army Medical Officer and poet, feels the pressures of Japanese society building against their relationship until they both have to make a choice. It was on this experience that Mori based his first book Maihime (The Dancing Girl) in 1890.
